Which Licence Do You Need?

Australian heavy vehicle licences step up by vehicle size and axle count. Most drivers start at LR or MR and progress through HR to HC.

Entry LevelLight rigid truck used for LR licence training

LR — Light Rigid

  • Over 4.5t up to 8t GVM
  • Car licence held 1+ year

What it covers: The first step above a car licence. Covers rigid vehicles with a Gross Vehicle Mass over 4.5 tonnes and up to 8 tonnes, including light buses.

Eligibility: You generally need to have held a car (C) licence for at least one year. Age and holding-period rules vary by state.

You will be trained and assessed on

  • Daily vehicle inspection and cabin drill
  • Mirror set-up, blind spots and low-speed manoeuvring
  • Gear selection and smooth clutch control
  • Reversing, kerbside stops and confined-space turns
  • Load restraint basics and safe loading practice

Why drivers take it: The quickest route into courier, trades, catering and light delivery work without jumping straight to a large truck.

MR — Medium Rigid

What it covers: Rigid trucks with two axles and a Gross Vehicle Mass over 8 tonnes. A big jump in size from LR, and the licence a lot of local freight roles ask for.

Eligibility: You generally need to have held a car (C) licence for at least one year. Confirm the current requirement for your state before booking.

You will be trained and assessed on

  • Pre-start checks, air brake familiarisation and coupling awareness
  • Managing length, height and tail swing in traffic
  • Roundabouts, multi-lane merging and turning lines
  • Reversing to a dock and blind-side reversing
  • Load restraint, weight distribution and mass limits

HR — Heavy Rigid

  • 3+ axles, over 8t GVM
  • Car licence held 2+ years

What it covers: Rigid trucks with three or more axles, and buses of any length. The licence most employers advertise for, and the prerequisite for stepping up to HC later.

Eligibility: You generally need to have held a car (C) licence for at least two years. Some states allow progression from MR after a set period.

You will be trained and assessed on

  • Full daily inspection to assessment standard
  • Air brake system checks and correct brake testing
  • Managing a loaded three-axle vehicle on grades and in wet conditions
  • Reversing, alley docking and confined-site manoeuvring
  • Fatigue management, work diary and mass compliance awareness

HC — Heavy Combination

  • Prime mover and semi-trailer
  • HR licence required

What it covers: Prime movers towing a single semi-trailer, or rigid vehicles towing heavy trailers. It is the next step for drivers moving into combination freight work.

Eligibility: You need to meet your state's holding-period requirements for an HR or equivalent licence before upgrading to HC.

You will be trained and assessed on

  • Coupling and uncoupling procedures
  • Pre-start inspection and air brake checks
  • Managing trailer swing, turning lines and reversing
  • Load restraint, mass limits and combination vehicle safety

Refresher Training

What it covers: Short, targeted lessons for drivers who already hold a truck licence but have been out of the seat, are changing vehicle type, or want to rebuild confidence before starting a new job.

Eligibility: You must already hold the relevant licence class. We start with an assessment drive and build the plan around what we find.

You will be trained and assessed on

Pre-Employment Training

What it covers: Preparation for an employer’s pre-start drive or induction assessment. We run through what the company is likely to check and fix the habits that cost people the job.

Eligibility: Suitable for anyone holding the relevant class who has a driving assessment or trial shift coming up.

You will be trained and assessed on

CBT&A Assessment

  • LR, MR, HR or HC
  • Already competent drivers

What it covers: Assessment-only bookings for drivers who are already competent and simply need to be assessed by an authorised CBT&A examiner.

Eligibility: We will normally ask for a short verification drive first. If you are not yet at standard we will tell you honestly rather than fail you on the day.

You will be trained and assessed on

  • Verification drive against the competency standards
  • Full assessment conducted by an authorised examiner
  • Clear written feedback on any unit not yet achieved
